An inspiring story about Colin and Sandra Baker, a couple who moved out to a tiny ex-gold mining town Warrego in the Northern Territory, and managed to increase the school attendance record to 100 per cent.

Warrego, 50 kilometres from Tennant Creek on the rim of the Tanami Desert, was once home to 3000 people. At 56 and close to retirement, Colin Baker decided to apply to become principal of Warrego primary school. His wife Sandra arrived a month later to become school administrator, which included being head cook and bottlewasher. “I was the nanny” she says.

However, four months later the mine closed and everyone left, except the Baker’s. To keep the primary school open, Colin needed to find a way of encouraging the children from Mungalawurru the remote aboriginal community 35 kilometres away to come to school.
